Quotation of the Week 08/13/08: J.R.R. Tolkien

"Don't take names to yourself...It's unwise, whether they are true or false."
-from The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

A negative "name" or title applied to yourself is always unwise. Calling yourself an idiot or a ninny hammer or what-have-you can only lead to self-loathing. And calling yourself an amazing athlete, even when true, can lead to self-aggrandizement. However, I believe it is important to refer to yourself as honestly as possible, and if you are a good athlete I think it's okay to admit the fact--modestly. People tend to become the things that they call themselves, so if you are going to label yourself falsely, at least do it on the good side.
